Wow! I am just learning now that automatic deductions are not a good thing either. Believe me, I’ve been through a huge mess to find that out! If something happens – like it did with you and like it could with anyone – this is the kind of mess that you and I have found ourselves in. I don’t know if you need to get rid of your chequing account. I don’t understand your bank’s reasoning for not stopping them.
I was able to stop all of them with a $12.00 fee for each one which was well worth the mental anguish. I’m sure there is a way you can get the bank to stop all further post-dated checks and automatic deductions. I know I called a few companies and told them I put a stop to all automatic deductions and would be sending them the payments from now on (and I hadn’t stopped them yet but they believed me, phew!).
It would be hard to live without a checking account because you would have to send by money order (which costs more) or walk around to everyone you owe and pay in person. If you can get the bank to stop the automatic deductions (or call the creditors and say you have – it may stop some of them at least), you can catch up. I would speak to the bank manager if they tell you you can’t without charging ridiculous fees.
